Why is it that some people get white hair and some get grey? My relatives on my Dad's?

side of the family all got white hair. They all had dark hair before. Where as my Mom's side of the family either didn't get grey or got grey hair. I don't think their hair was as dark to begin with. Does it have to do with the fact that the family that got white hair at first had dark hair?
