What's a good bike for a great price? ?

I haven't had a decent bike in five years. Last one I had was a Gary Fisher mountain bike. Was only 900 retail at the time. The bike was actually a little small for me. I want another mountain/trail bike but have less money now. I'm also interested in the new 29er's they have now. I'm 6'3 so I like the bigger wheels. I'm ok with a hard tail and want some suspension upfront. I stopped by my only local bike shop and they sell "specialized" brand bikes. The new 29er in there is 600 bucks. Is this a good bike and good deal? I like the look. Just need to ride it. Any other suggestions?
