Is Ron Paul ideologically incompatible with any other Republican on a ticket besides Gary Johnson?

How could a president without a party behind him get elected in the first place? I don't think most nominees try to pick a VP who is the same as they are. I think they try to pick a complement so they appeal to everyone under the umbrella.
